DESCRIPTION:Our Call for Abstracts is now open for the 1st International Clinical Care Symposium on SMA\, which will take place on 29–30 August 2025 in Milan\, Italy. \nThe event will be held in a hybrid format. \nThis first edition\, “Medical Emergencies in SMA: Pathophysiology\, Prevention\, and Response”\, will focus on the causes\, management\, and prevention of acute medical events that can lead to life-threatening emergencies for individuals living with SMA\, as well as strategies for their prevention and management. \nThe Symposium will bring together an international group of SMA-expert researchers and multidisciplinary clinical professionals (including physicians\, nurses\, physiotherapists\, occupational therapists\, nutritionists\, speech specialists)\, along with patient advocates and industry representatives. \nThe event will be accredited for continuing medical education for healthcare professionals and also provides an excellent opportunity for early-stage researchers and clinicians to network and share their work. \nAll in-person attendees are invited to submit an abstract for consideration as a poster presentation and/or a short talk. \nAbstracts are encouraged on any emergency-related aspect of SMA\, including fundamental research across different domains\, clinical presentations of acute episodes\, and practical approaches to prevention or management. \nTopics featured in the main sessions may include: \n•                 Metabolic system in SMA: biological basis and different types of metabolic disorders in SMA; impairment of liver and kidneys; dietary and nutritional needs\, including clinical presentations and management strategies \n•                 Respiratory system in SMA: pathophysiology and anatomical considerations; tools and methods to prevent and manage respiratory complications \n•                 Bulbar system in SMA: anatomy and physiology of swallowing; clinical presentations such as choking episodes and aspiration-related illnesses \n•                 Country experiences: approaches to preventing and managing clinical emergencies in SMA\, addressing both caregivers and healthcare professionals\, particularly in emergency settings; highlighting existing gaps and unmet needs in the management of critical episodes. \nAdditional relevant topics may include\, but are not limited to\, the cardiovascular\, skeletal\, gastrointestinal\, and urological systems\, as well as anaesthetic considerations. \nAbstracts will be selected for poster presentations and/or talks.
