From November 26th to 30th, more than 240 professionals interested in myology gathered at the Vidawasi Cultural Center to attend the 17th Euro-Latin American Summer School of Myology (EVELAM 2024). Twenty-five European and Latin American experts in neuromuscular diseases joined 240 attendees to share and exchange knowledge. While the majority of the audience were Peruvians (60%), representatives from 14 other Latin American countries also participated, alongside speakers from Canada, Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
This year, EVELAM 2024 was held in Urubamba, Perú, at the heart of the Inca Sacred Valley, surrounded by the stunning Andean countryside and numerous archaeological sites.
The scientific program covered both basic and applied aspects of myology and neuromuscular diseases. In addition to EVELAM’s usual agenda, this year featured three workshops: one on the electrophysiology of the neuromuscular junction, led by Dr. Marcelo Rugiero; another on physiotherapy and motor assessment scales, led by expert physiotherapists Cecilia Hervias and José Corderí; and an interactive workshop on the interpretation of genetic tests, led by Drs. Cristiane Moreno and Eduardo Tizzano. Colleagues from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Uruguay shared real-world data on implementing high-cost disease-modifying therapies for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in their respective countries, followed by an open debate.
The local organizing committee, expertly led by Dr. Peggy Martínez, Dr. Iván Dueñas, and the Peruvian Society of Neurology (https://www.spneurologia.org.pe/), did an outstanding job. Breakfasts and lunches were provided for all participants, delegates, and speakers. Additionally, the welcome cocktail, which featured a demonstration of traditional Peruvian music and dances, created a warm and collegial atmosphere where experts and students engaged in friendly interactions—a hallmark of EVELAM events.
The event also received scientific endorsement from TREAT-NMD and the World Muscle Society (WMS).
The next EVELAM is scheduled to take place in San José, Costa Rica, at the beginning of December 2025. Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen! More information will be available soon at www.evelam.org.
