This month, the spotlight is on Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a hereditary condition that affects the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and sensory changes, particularly in the hands and feet. Despite the complexity of this condition, the theme for this year, “Nobody Is Perfect“, emphasises that everyone is different, and regardless of how CMT affects someone, they can achieve great things.
At TREAT-NMD, we are dedicated to improving the diagnosis, care, and treatment of those with Charcot-Marie-Tooth. This month, we’re highlighting CMT UK, an organisation committed to supporting people with CMT by promoting better healthcare, research, and understanding of the condition.
Throughout October, CMT UK is increasing efforts to raise awareness of the condition and the resources available to support those living with CMT. It’s an opportunity for us all to spread the word, share knowledge, and help more people understand this condition, which was first described in 1886 by doctors Charcot, Marie, and Tooth.
CMT UK provides several ways to get involved during the awareness month:
- Share awareness packs with anyone you know affected by CMT to connect them with vital resources.
- Inform your GP about CMT by sharing information to help them better understand the condition.
- Donate to help CMT UK continue supporting individuals and healthcare professionals across the UK.
- Spread the word on social media using the hashtag #CMTawarenessmonth to raise awareness.
- Become a member of CMT UK to stay connected with the latest information and support.
As part of our effort to help raise awareness around the diagnosis and care of rare neuromuscular diseases, we also invite you to listen to our recent POD-NMD podcast, which features Hayley Ramjattan who is a Clinical Specialist Neuromuscular Physiotherapist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, discussing Congenital Myasthenia Syndrome, a rare disorder that shares some similar challenges with CMT. You can listen to it here > https://www.pod-nmd.org/podcasts/other-podcasts/
Join us this October in supporting the CMT community, raising awareness, and advancing the future of care and treatment for those living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Together, we can make a difference.
