Every year on June 20th, the world unites to observe World FSHD Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD). As the most common form of muscular dystrophy, FSHD affects over a million individuals globally, impacting their ability to perform everyday tasks and, poignantly, even to just smile. This day is a beacon of hope, resilience, and solidarity for FSHD patients, their families, and friends.
At TREAT-NMD, we are deeply committed to the cause of FSHD. Our mission goes beyond just raising awareness; we are dedicated to making tangible differences in the lives of those affected by this condition. Our team is passionate about advocating for FSHD research, fostering community support, and driving initiatives that highlight the daily challenges faced by individuals with FSHD.
World FSHD Day is celebrated by turning everything orange, a colour symbolising energy, enthusiasm, and hope. In previous years, the TREAT-NMD team has shown unwavering support by donning orange attire and participating in community events. One of our most memorable contributions was lighting up the iconic Millennium Bridge in orange, a striking visual statement that resonated with thousands and amplified the message of FSHD awareness.
This year FSHD society are asking people to show their support by participating in their Orange Slice Selfie Campaign. This creative initiative involves posting selfies with orange slices in place of smiles, a playful yet powerful way to highlight the facial muscle weakness experienced by FSHD patients. By sharing these images, we spread awareness and empathy, connecting with those who might not be familiar with FSHD.
So this year, TREAT-NMD will be doing just that as well as updating our social media profile pictures, embracing the theme of orange to show our solidarity.
